In the citizen-owned era, The Heritage Society founded the 1886 Lunchroom, successfully operated and staffed for over 20 years by members. Stocked with recipes from the hotel's past (including a stint by Neiman Marcus culinary director and "duchess of Texas cuisine" Helen Corbitt), and their own family histories, the ladies of the Heritage Society operated a venue that to this day is known as "Austin's socializing parlor." Paying homage to the city and Heritage Society's roles, the 1886 Café & Bakery opened on July 4, 2002.
Today, located at the bustling corner of Sixth and Brazos streets, the 1886 Café & Bakery remains a respected establishment and favorite Austin bakery for many. The quaint Victorian-style café serves up delicious traditional Texas comfort foods that combine time-honored original recipes with contemporary preparation. Dine on dishes such as Helen Corbitt's Cheese Soup, our famous Hangover Burger, or a bonafide Texas classic, Hot Fried Chicken. Peer through the charming bakery window for a glimpse of Executive Pastry Chef Tony Sansalone and crew, working on an impressive array of scratch made pastries and Austin's finest cakes. Our coffee counter and espresso bar are also available for quick, grab-and-go items.
From the elegant, timeless lobby, walk up the grand staircase and enter into old-world Texas, fit for a cattle baron. Named one of the 10 Best Hotel Bars in America by USA Today and The Best Bar in Texas by Southern Living, The Driskill Bar is, without question, as Texas as it gets for downtown Austin bars. With its rustic leather couches, cowhide bar stools, cattle branded custom carpet, and the grand Texas Longhorn adorning the wall, you will have no question where you sit as you sip your whiskey cocktail. Featuring Daily Live Music, The Driskill Bar offers a relaxed atmosphere, bracing spirits, fine wines and good friendships.
The Driskill Grill is one of Austin's most iconic restaurants. As a renowned Austin institution, it has been the site of many legendary events including the location of President Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson's first date. The Driskill Grill continues its tradition of excellent service and refined American cuisine, offering guests an authentically Austin and distinctively Driskill dining experience.
